Delivering Personalized & Accessible Exercise Prescriptions So that Exercise Works Like Medicine

We partnered with a cardiologist and exercise scientist to start a new digital health company, Medicine in Motion (MIM). We created a unique in-home, online, personalized test that generates and delivers a prescribed heart rate range to maintain during exercise we call The Exercise Prescription™ - using an Apple watch and an iPhone app.

                  Problem:

Exercise is still perceived by many as being an ‘optional’ part of their health plan. Yet, if prescribed with amount and dosage requirements based on your unique personal health profile - it can act just like traditional medicine: people can lose weight, lower blood pressure, lower glucose, and lower cholesterol. Essentially helping to prevent two of the leading causes of death in the United States: cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

But staying in motion is not only hard, it’s made even harder by the way the ‘exercise’ message is being delivered. Most patients whose doctors’ recommend physical activity, do NOT adhere to the recommendation and see it as optional. This is partly due to practitioners only ‘suggesting’ exercise alongside other health options such as medications and diet modification. This ignores the medicinal impact exercise can have on crucial biomarkers. Physical activity within your prescribed heart rate range will affect your biomarkers, while exercising outside your prescribed heart will not work like medicine to affect these metrics.

Finally, for many patients, the cost of comprehensive metabolic exams to identify your unique gas exchange profile and generate a personalized exercise prescription is prohibitive. Anyone should be able to get an exercise prescription, at any time, and understand how working within that prescribed heart rate zone can move the needle on biomarkers for weight, cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure.

What can you learn from this AI partnership in health care?

It’s possible to reach individualized health goal targets and maintain cardiovascular wellness; patients just need access to their numbers and some support. Affordable AI- enabled experiences empower patients to adhere to their personalized exercise prescriptions, and provide care-givers an accessible way to coach and monitor their patients.

Custom data-driven AI solutions mean accessibility and equitability in and beyond digital health.

                  Solution:

We developed a cloud-based protocol that assesses an individual’s cardiovascular health and generates a personalized exercise prescription that includes optimal intensity (measured in elective heart-rate range) and activity duration per week delivered via smartphone and watch app. Our product pinpoints when users’ bodies are burning fat and when they are burning carbs to affect disease markers. It’s accessible anytime, anywhere, to anyone.

                  Outcome:

Our product helps individuals optimize their exercise intensity and duration to achieve outcomes such as reduced blood pressure, lower bad cholesterol, and weight loss. During our pilot program, over 64% of patients that began with an unhealthy fasting-glucose range ended the program in the healthy range. Our product offers providers a valuable service to encourage consistent exercise prescription compliance, and empower patients to reach their wellness goals, and change their mindset about exercise. (One heartbeat at a time).
Over 7.3 million people who currently cannot afford cardiovascular care can now achieve their health goals by using exercise (which is free) as medicine, and simply dying of old age instead of disease
